KENT NEWS:

Crime is falling in our region, according to Home Office figures, and is down by more than 10 per cent compared with last year.

The latest statistics for South Kent – which covers Shepway, Dover and Ashford – show total recorded crime fell by 13.2 per cent from April 2009 to March 2010.

There were 2,797 fewer victims of crime, with the number of incidents dropping from 21,113 to 18,316 year-on-year.

Home burglaries are the lowest in Kent, at 5.7 per 1,000 households, from 893 to 789.

Violent crime is down by 9.8 per cent, from 4,787 to 4,317; and robbery by 13.4 per cent, from 172 to 149.

Area commander Chief Superintendent Chris Hogben said: “This is a result of hard work by police officers, PCSOs and staff in south Kent.

“My officers have spoken to thousands of residents to find out about local concerns and tackle them direct.

“This led to south Kent achieving the highest increase in public confidence across Kent.”

Neighbourhood task teams had helped reduce antisocial behaviour, especially in town centres on Friday and Saturday nights.

“We face challenging times ahead, but I’m confident my officers will continue to provide a first-class policing service for South Kent,” Ch Supt Hogben said.
