Canterbury magistrates court
KENT NEWS:

Karen Barry had a horrible day when her car was stolen and she borrowed her mother’s to go to work.

She got her mother to check whether she was insured, but in the 17 minutes it took to get her policy altered a car crashed into her.

Miss Barry, of Sandwich Road, Eastry, found herself in court for having no insurance even though her mother had been in the process of arranging cover.

She admitted driving without insurance.

Puneet Rai, defending, said: “She needed to borrow her mother’s car to get to work because hers had been stolen.

“Her mother rang to confirm the cover and there was a genuine misunderstanding as to when it became active because of the time it took to process.

“In the meantime she was involved in an accident which wasn’t her fault. Both Miss Barry and her mother are horrified at what happened.”

She told Canterbury magistrates that they called the insurance company at 8.43am on June 29 and cover started at 9am.

In the meantime a car crashed into the back of her mother’s car.

Chairman of the Bench Anthony Snow said: “It’s an unfortunate case in unusual circumstances. If you had waited a few minutes you would have been insured.”

Miss Barry, 46, was fined £75 and given six points on her licence. She was also ordered to pay £15 victim surcharge plus £35 costs.
